This website is an educational and reference tool for small business owners to get information on topics like picking the right business structure, planning, marketing, and more. This site is intended for any small business person, including home-office professionals, new start-ups, or even if you’re just contemplating a new business.
You’ll get breaking news updates here about SBA loans & grants, federal bidding opportunities, legislation affecting small businesses, free online training opportunities, and how-to articles covering everything you need to start or grow your business. You can use the drop-down menus on the top of any page for navigation. They are self-explanatory. If this is your first visit here, my Table of Contents is a great place to start.
I’m a Small Business Marketing and Development Consultant. I help small business owners and home office professionals start or grow their business by differentiating themselves and the way they do business. You can learn more about who I am by clicking here, and more about what I do on my Services page. I don’t believe the self-employed or home-office professional is served very well by current media or educational outlets. Hence, this site.
I’m very passionate about small businesses, and I’d like you to succeed in your endeavor. Ideally, you’ll hire me to help you. But even if you don’t, I’ll try to give you as much information as you need to do it yourself, or at least to make a wise decision on who is the best person to hire to help you. So, let’s get started…
In most face-to-face conversations, it only takes a few seconds to form a first-impression. Most of that impression, probably 90 percent or more, comes from your appearance, body language, the way you’re dressed, and the way you speak (vocabulary, mannerisms, tone of voice, etc.). A very small portion, only about 10 percent, is based upon what you actually say.
When it comes to your written business materials, guess what? 100 percent of the impression you make is what you say and how you say it. When your customer reads your newsletter, or your banker picks up your business plan, that’s it. You only get one first-impression. One chance. No explanations if something isn’t clear, no chance to explain what they just read, or to tell them about the part that you forgot to include.
In today’s economy, it’s more important than ever to get your message across clearly, professionally and effectively. I have the skills and experience to help you craft your communications, and to help you choose the best and widest distribution for them.
The most important piece of advice I can give you is this: Always tailor your document to your target audience. This applies not only to your marketing materials, but to everything you write. It includes your press releases, your white papers, and even your business plan. Determine who your audience is, then write for them.
